Success Stories

Father Fabretto's commitment can be gauged by the thousands of "muchachos" who have gone on to become successful teachers, farmers, tradesmen, businessmen and responsible parents. Here are just a few of their stories.

Wilder Zammora Torres, age 19
Wilder is currently studying Food Sciences and Quality Control at Modesto Junior College in California. Wilder was awarded a Central American Peace scholarship by Georgetown University and US AID. Wilder has been part of the Fabretto Family since the age of 3 when he and two brothers were orphaned. Wilder will return to Nicaragua later this year as his two year degree program ends. He is interested in completing his undergraduate studies, and working in his field of study.

Maria Magdaleña Alvarado, age 20
Magdaleña, an indigenous single mother from Cusmapa, is currently studying in her second year of a three-year forestry technician program on a scholarship funded by the Tin Roof Foundation. She was an excellent student with good grades in her first year, but could not afford the $60 a month needed for tuition and was on the the verge of dropping out when the president of the school contacted Fabretto and a scholarship was arranged. Her studies at the Nicaraguan technical school, INTECFOR, combined with her practical, hands on experience in the Fabretto Sustainable Forestry Program are teaching Magdaleña how to manage Nicaragua's forests in a responsible, sustainable manner. This training is extremely important because it offers Magdaleña the chance to have a job to support her family, but also because her family owns a small timber stand that if managed properly can generate important income to augment her salary. Teaching local landowners modern techniques for stewarding natural resources in a sustainable way is an important part of Fabretto's efforts to enable the community to lift itself out of poverty, reduce environmental degradation caused by irresponsible land use, and improve the local ecology.

Vicente Baquedano Betanes, 46
Born in a small mountain village, Vicente and his eight brothers and sisters were neglected by their impoverished parents. At the age of 9, Vicente walked over 25 miles to Cusmapa find Father Fabretto, for food, a home, an education and hope for the future. Fabretto took him into la Familia, and eventually Father sent Vicente to Managua for high school and vocational training. After high school Vicente studied nursing on a scholarship Fabretto was able to find for him. Now Vicente is the Director of the Fabretto Oratorio Domingo Savio, outside Managua where he manages feeding, healthcare and education of over 400 Fabretto muchachos.
