Music and song have always been a way of life in La Familia Fabretto. The Music Program is tremendously popular with the kids and its benefits are both immediate and long term - energizing students and teaching important life lessons.
The Music Program consists of individual and group lessons in choir, recorder, guitar, marimba, keyboard and piano. Participants are required to learn the fundamentals on the recorder and, if they wish, sing in the choir.
Here, they learn the basics of rhythm, tempo, etc., and learn to read and write music. After an introduction, students may study the guitar, marimba, keyboard and more advanced techniques of the recorder and voice. Our students perform at local church and civic functions.
Motivation
Minimum grade point average requirements, school and music class attendance requirements create powerful incentives for students to take school seriously. Music students have significantly higher grade point averages than their peers not in the program.
Cultural Heritage
Traditional Nicaraguan folkloric music, songs and instruments are the primary focus, helping the children to understand and preserve their cultural heritage.
Personal Responsibility
Students must come on time and prepared for class and so learn to manage their time and take personal responsibility for their actions. Students must make a commitment to practice and improve.
Broadens Horizons
Trips to perform or see and hear culturally important artists in other parts of Nicaragua are the first time out of the village for many of the kids and present a rare learning opportunity.
