In 2002, Fabretto sponsored the start of a small Carpentry Shop with one carpenter, Adrian Vallejos, a lifelong resident of Cusmapa. In June 2005, the shop was named “El Buen Samaritano”, or the Good Samaritan Workshop because as Adrian says in his own words:
“When someone dies in Cusmapa, a family member comes here and says “Make us a coffin”, and we don't charge them. The other reason is that Father Fabretto always said that you have to do the good and right thing without looking at who you are doing it for. I’ve always felt that our workshop is at the service of the children, with a vision towards improving their abilities and lives”.
Today, Fabretto's Good Samaritan Workshop produces doors, windows, and furniture items for our various school and educational facilities and for sale in the local market. The shop also manufactures didactic toys and games for national education programs and small handicrafts such as puzzles and ornaments for sale in the United States.
In November, 2006 the Carpentry Shop underwent a an 800 square foot expansion, to 1,800 square feet, in order to accommodate a generous donation of woodworking equipment from Gleason Woodwork, Inc. and Fabretto’s community of supporters in the United States. Depending on production levels and orders, the shop will employ between 2 to 5 carpenters and is able to provide a vocational training opportunity for graduates of the Fabretto program who wish to study carpentry.
