NicaHOPE Vocational Training Program

Support This Project!

The NicaHOPE program at Fabretto is focused providing young men and women who live in and around La Chureca, the Managua City Dump, with vocational training opportunities so they can learn valuable real life skills.

In the computer training program, over 200 students are learning basic computer skills, Microsoft Office, and internet navigation, opening their minds to a world beyond their front doors, while improving their education and future job opportunities. The large majority of formal sector jobs in the capital city where these students live require at least some level of computer skills. Program graduates will be certified in their skill area, and given assistance in securing job placements or further education upon graduation from the program. Meanwhile, younger students are learning basic computer skills and strengthening their reading, math, and critical thinking skills through educational computer programs.

The second area of vocational training is the jewelry-making program for young women that currently has 6 classes that meet throughout the week. The girls take classes for 3 hours a week to learn how to make jewelry, and then come throughout the rest of the week to use and improve their newly-acquired skills. In addition to developing their creativity and providing alternative activity to working in the trash, this program serves as a means of income-generation for the girls. Each girl receives a portion of the profit for each item she makes that is sold and, as she improves her skills, will earn more. The program is also teaching the girls about the business fundamentals of jewelry making, so that each program graduate will have the capability to start her own micro-business to earn a living apart without having to sort trash in the dump.  To buy Jewelry, Click Here.
