Canterbury 2010 Safe Water Project
Canterbury School, a Catholic college preparatory coeducational boarding and day school (grades 9-12) in New Milford, CT, is committed to the work of the Fabretto Children’s Foundation. In 2005, Canterbury sent the first high school group to volunteer with Fabretto in Nicaragua. Each year since, the school has sent a group of 10-12 student volunteers for a week in March to experience first-hand the work of Fabretto and to meet the children served in the community of Cusmapa. In addition, Canterbury currently sponsors two Fabretto children who study at the San Isidro center.
Canterbury volunteers engage in projects that assist the Fabretto programs and the community at large. They have participated in projects such as planting and reforesting, gardening, painting, repairing walls, visiting the infirmed, and delivering food and supplies to remote communities. However, the heart of each trip is the Canterbury students’ interacting with the children of Fabretto.
This year’s volunteers will dedicate their efforts to the urgent need for clean water in the rural communities around Cusmapa. Drinking, cooking with, and bathing in contaminated river and well-water pose serious health problems, especially for the young.Fortunately, there is an easy-to-use and easy-to-transport water filtration system, called a filtrón, which provides clean drinking water for $US21 a piece. The students' goal is to place filtrones in all Fabertto Center kitchens, classroom buildings, and to distribute personal filtrónes to Fabretto families who, because they live in extremely isolated areas, have little or no access to clean water.
Clean water significantly boosts a family’s overall health – and a child’s good health directly affects his or her academic performance, a major goal of Fabretto organization.
